Replace old windows to stop heat escapingThe winter weather is certainly never kind, and the last few weeks have taught us just how difficult a cold snap can be. With harsh winds blowing and the icy roads to negotiate, the cold and wet months can certainly be a miserable time.

We all like to come home to the warmth and comfort of our living room, but if you can feel just as much of a draught coming through your old windows as you did when you were out and about, it’s time to look at replacement windows – possibly upgrade to a triple glazing solution too!

The Problem With Old Windows

Whether your home has wood, metal or plastic windows, over time they will start to deteriorate. It’s this, coupled with possible poor installation, that usually lets the cold air and damp through.

Extremes in temperature can cause timber and plastic to twist and warp, so the frames no longer contain the glass quite so neatly. This can eventually stop windows from closing properly – a great way for draughts to appear.

Windows can be the cause of cold spots in the home, and the end result is high utility bills. Every time you walk past a window in a room and feel cool, the first thing you do is turn up the temperature of the central heating thermometer to try to increase the heat within the home. The poor performance of your windows inevitably pushes up your bills.

New Year – New Start – New Double Glazing

Customers are often amazed at the difference new windows can make. Those tiny gaps and ill-fitting frames have a slow, cumulative effect, and a brand new window can offer a real difference in heat retention and noise reduction.

Technologies have changed greatly over the last 10-15 years, and the efficiency of the products available now is drastically different to the efficiency offered by windows fitted even 10 years ago.

The thermal insulation offered by a modern window is greatly improved, and ventilation is more sophisticated, which means the amount of condensation inside the window pane will be greatly decreased. Choose products which include thermal breakers, and you’ll find condensation all but disappears. This reduces the risk of damp around the window area and the surrounding walls, which helps make the room feel warmer.

While double glazing is often sufficient to provide excellent thermal insulation, triple glazing can now be installed without long order times. With Hamiltons, you can have the best on the market in place well before the first daffodils are in bloom.
