Homes put to the test

In winter, our homes are really put to the test against the merciless UK elements. Damp is a common and yet concerning problem that often crops up with the season’s downpours. So, here at Hamilton Windows, we have put together some tips on how you can give your home the ammunition it needs to fight the winter damp.

Get your roof ready for rain!

The rain’s first port of call when it falls from the sky is your roof. So, first and foremost, you have to make sure that your roof is ready for the rain. Importantly, you need to consider the roofline products you use, as these play a big part in protecting your house from the damp, especially in your conservatory where there is so much glass.

At Hamilton Windows, we use robust, weather-resistant UPVC, as it is not only adept at fending off the rain but is also incredibly durable and will prove to be a savvy long-term investment. For flat roofing, we recommend completely waterproof felt.

Those little extras

You also need to attend to any faulty guttering or downpipes which, if broken and directing water onto your home, can cause serious damp problems. In addition, we recommend that you invest in roofing features such as barge boards which will direct water away from your walls, decreasing the chance of having damp problems and also make sure your fascias and soffits are not showing signs of damage.

Tackle condensation

When you are eating your Sunday roast and the kids are drawing pictures in the condensation on your steamed-up kitchen windows, think about where that water is going to go. Condensation is a huge factor in causing damp problems in homes, and should be tackled as soon as possible.

How can you tackle condensation? You can invest in double or triple glazing, as the inside windowpane should retain your room temperature and reduce the amount of condensation you create. Another way of reducing condensation is to improve your ventilation, giving vaporised water molecules a way out of your house.
