Adding finishing touches – how to personalise your front door

Your front door is one of the first things your visitors, friends and family will see when they arrive at your home. As such, if you are looking to make your home more characterful and unique from the outside, then your front door is a great place to start. Whether you want to replace your front door with a new customised version, or simply add a few personal touches, you can make your front door as distinctive as you like. Here are just some of the simple and cost-effective ways your front door can be tailored to bring out the character of your home.

Add a knocker

Having an unusual knocker on your front door is an instant way to get your visitors talking about your home. Common designs include lions, the green man and gargoyles, but you will be able to find a wide range of intriguing styles, so something is bound to suit your personality. We have seen everything from dragonflies and bees to cats that have mice dangling out their mouths!

Upgrade your door handle

Just like knockers, door handles are easy to replace and a simple way to inject individuality into your front door. This is just a cosmetic change – it doesn’t mean you have to alter the locking system. If you wanted to highlight the contemporary nature of your home, you could opt for a sleek, chrome handle; if your taste is more traditional, then you may go for a brass door knob. Or, if you want to personalise your door even further, then you could get a knob or handle custom-made in a unique design – our favourite yet has been a giant brass hand!

Customise your new door

If you decide that you’d like to start afresh with a brand-new front door, then you have a lot of choices when it comes to customisation. First, colour: you can select virtually any colour or finish you would like for your front door, whether that’s a contemporary grey, traditional woodgrain or bold yellow. Then there are windows to think about – do you want your door to be solid, or would you prefer glass panels? If you opt for glass, you can choose how many panels you want, and how big these should be. Getting frosted glass is a popular option for privacy purposes, and this can be customised with a colourful pattern or elaborate picture.
