Roof lanterns fitted in Surrey

A roof lantern is a stylish, functional and affordable home improvement that could breathe new life into your home. Many of our customers chose a roof lantern because they crave natural light; others just like the way they look.

To achieve more light, aesthetic improvement, or even better ventilation, a professionally installed roof lantern could be just what you need. But it’s important to buy from a knowledgeable manufacturer who can handle the whole process, right through to installation.

Here are some of our design and installation tips.

What is a Roof Lantern?

A roof lantern is a glass structure, usually with a slim aluminium frame. The lantern is fitted into an existing flat roof. Roof lanterns are modelled on conservatory and orangery constructions, and are a common feature over single storey extensions.

Roof lanterns can have integrated vents and blinds to help air circulate, but they allow you to keep the extension you’ve already got, maximising investment and modernising the space. The roof doesn’t have to be completely flat, as we can work with a certain degree of pitch.

Design

Hamiltons designs bespoke roof lanterns, so we can come up with a look that matches the style and age of your home. When planning a roof lantern, think about external appearance, as well as the available space. Depending on the structure of the roof, we may need to install extra beams to hold the weight of the lantern, and this will need to be factored in to the quote.

While large roof lanterns look stunning, there may be a trade-off between the amount of light you bring in, and the difficulty of keeping the room warm in winter. It’s possible to fit more than one roof lantern, which may be more aesthetically pleasing than one large one, and may also offer energy efficiency advantages.

Make sure your roof lantern includes self cleaning glass that repels dirt and dust. This will save you money in the long term, as you won’t need to pay a specialist cleaner quite so often.

Finally, don’t forget the colour. We often assume roof lanterns are white, but this need not be the case; aluminium is available in dozens of RAL colours, from greys and browns through to bright reds and blues.

Installation

The frame of a roof lantern is light, but the glass is extremely heavy, so professional fitting is a must. There’s nothing quite as dangerous as a large glass structure that hasn’t been properly secured. Our specialist fitters bring your roof lantern to site and assemble it in situ, so the installation process is safe and efficient.

We install all roof lanterns with special thermal insulation boards, which help to ensure that your property stays warm in winter. And our double glazing is designed to be extremely efficient, with the same U-values you benefit from in your windows.
