We can install double glazing in high-rise apartments

London is home to some of the newest, most impressive and most luxurious accommodation in the world. Apartments change hands for over a million pounds on a regular basis. There are also huge numbers of tower blocks that sprung up during the late 20th century, some of which now serve as reminders of design trends of the past.

All of these buildings need to be constantly maintained, both to improve their appearance and to maintain good safety standards. Fortunately, Hamiltons are experts in installing brand new, secure uPVC windows in high-rise apartments.

The Process

Installing windows is traditionally seen as an activity that takes place from the outside, but this practice is slowly changing. Obviously, there are clear safety issues to take into account if you’re working outside the window opening – and there’s the problem of getting fitters up to get the windows in place. For various reasons, including security concerns, windows now tend to be fitted from the inside anyway.

In an apartment block, working inside allows us to work relatively freely, and avoid lifting any glass outside the walls of the apartment where it would certainly cause serious injury if dropped.

On some floors, our fitters can use scaffolding to get a good view from the outside too. This is not essential with some frames, but it can be important when working with timber. If your apartment is located within 3-4 stories of the ground, then this is something to consider if you want the real wood finish. Remember that the cost of erecting scaffolding can add a significant sum to the price, so wood-grain foil on uPVC may be a cost-effective alternative.

Even though your windows will be high up, we will still fit high quality locks. Many apartment windows can be reached with a ladder, and locks are essential in keeping children and vulnerable adults safe.

The Preparation

New windows always require planning permission in flats or apartment blocks, unless you have purchased an exact match for the original windows. That’s why it’s important to work closely with your supplier to ensure you’re compliant with the rules.

Never attempt to fit a window yourself, or measure your own windows from the outside. Climbing ladders is dangerous enough without the weight of a window to carry, or the complication of trying to hold a tape measure while balancing precariously on the top step.

Expert Advice

As we’ve mentioned before, installing windows is rarely considered a DIY job, unless you have specific experience of the job. It’s important that you consult a glazing company that has experience of working at height, so you can benefit from their experience and the safety of a trained installation team.

Installing windows in a high-rise block need not be a complex endeavour, and Hamilton Windows would be pleased to talk you through your options. With many years’ experience, and a range of modern glazing products, we can help you to achieve the result you want at the right price point.
